Why do we get pulled toward the wrong partner?
It seems that pop music often captures this emotional truth. One of my favorite tunes is a pop song called “Clarity” by Zedd and Foxes. The melody of this high-energy song builds and drops, much like a relationship that feels irresistible and intoxicating, even when the singer knows it’s chaotic, confusing, and ultimately painful! It’s the emotional whiplash so many people experience when they’re drawn to someone who isn’t good for them.
As a counselor, I see this dynamic all the time. People come in confused, frustrated, and honestly, a little embarrassed that they’re so drawn to someone who creates conflict or instability in their life. People who struggle with the highs and lows of conflicted relationship patterns: torn between how they FEEL and what they KNOW. This song becomes like a mirror- reflecting the tension between longing and logic, desire and discernment-just as the highs and lows are characterized by the soaring song leads and then sudden drop-“Clarity”!
The Emotional Chemistry Trap
The song’s central tension depicts the push-pull of intense attraction mixed with emotional instability. Many people mistake intensity for compatibility. When a relationship feels electric, urgent or overwhelming, it can create the illusion of depth. People say, “I know this relationship isn’t good for me, but I can’t let go.” The emotional system becomes conditioned to crave the very thing that causes distress! So how does one recognize the patterns, and how does one choose relationships that support emotional health rather than undermine it? Let’s explore this next:
INTENSITY IS NOT INTIMACY
“Intensity” often comes from:
- Unresolved Attachment Wounds
- Fear of Abandonment
- Trauma Bonding
- Thrill of Unpredictability
- Nervous system activation mistaken for “sparks”
These Intense Relationship Patterns create a cycle that feels addictive. The highs are high, the lows are low, and the brain starts to equate emotional rollercoasters with love- which is why conflict can feel like connection.
HEALTHY LOVE DOESN’T REQUIRE CONFUSION
How does “Clarity” manifest in Relationships:
- Predictable Communication
- Emotional Safety
- Repair After Conflict
- Respect for Boundaries
- Shared Values
- Mutual Effort
- Sense of Being Grounded rather than Spun Out
The Clarity to be Seeking:
When someone makes your heart race, your thoughts spin, and your emotions swing from high to low, it can feel like passion. But often, this intensity is anxiety- or old attachment wounds being activated. If a relationship constantly leaves you questioning your worth, your stability, or your reality, that is NOT CLARITY. That is CONFUSION appearing to be chemistry. The emotional chaos of wanting someone who isn’t good for you-as the song captures.
If you are struggling with this pattern. You’re not alone. Many people find themselves repeatedly drawn to partners who create conflict or instability. This isn’t a character flaw- it is a pattern that can be understood and changed.
