One of my favorite tunes is a pop song called “Clarity” by Zedd and Foxes. The melody of this high-energy tune builds and drops- always providing me with a great cardio workout! Although I have been enjoying this song for some time, it recently dawned on me that the lyrics seemed to capture an emotional truth about relationships I hadn’t thought of before. As a therapist, I noticed the theme of this song being played out with client’s quite often. Those who struggle with the highs and lows in conflicted relationship patterns: people torn between what they FEEL and what they KNOW. This song becomes like a mirror- reflecting the tension between longing and logic, desire and discernment-just as the highs and lows are characterized by the soaring song leads and then sudden drop-“Clarity”!
The Emotional Chemistry Trap
The song’s central tension is the push-pull of intense attraction mixed with emotional instability. Many people mistake intensity for compatibility. When a relationship feels electric, urgent or overwhelming, it can create the illusion of depth. People say, “I know this relationship isn’t good for me, but I can’t let go.” The emotional system becomes conditioned to crave the very thing that causes distress!
INTENSITY IS NOT INTIMACY
“Intensity” often comes from:
- Unresolved Attachment Wounds
- Fear of Abandonment
- Trauma Bonding
- Thrill of Unpredictability
- Nervous system activation mistaken for “sparks”
These Patterns create a cycle that feels addictive. The highs are high, the lows are low, and the brain starts to equate emotional rollercoasters with love.
HEALTHY LOVE DOESN’T REQUIRE CONFUSION
“Clarity” in Relationships looks like:
- Predictable Communication
- Emotional Safety
- Repair After Conflict
- Respect for Boundaries
- Shared Values
- Mutual Effort
- A Sense of Being Grounded Not Spun Out
The Real Clarity We Should be Seeking:
If a relationship constantly leaves you questioning your worth, your stability, or your reality, that is NOT CLARITY. That is CONFUSION dressed up as chemistry. The emotional chaos of wanting someone who isn’t good for you-as the song captures.
One of the most important truths I hope to encourage with my clients are the 3 essential ingredients of a healthy relationship:
Choosing Partners who bring CALM, CONSISTENCY, AND EMOTIONAL SAFETY. They feel steady. predictable. Safe. Not Boring- just grounded.
Choose relationships that offer both passion and peace. That is true “CLARITY”.
